Entrusted by CAS President LU Yongxiang and on behalf of CAS, CAS Vice President CHEN Zhu attended the Third Annual Meeting of Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum held from Sept. 9 to 12 in Kyoto.

    The meeting was initiated by international S&T and business celebrities, including Koji Omi, member of Japan's House of Representatives and former Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy, Bruce Alberts, former President of the US National Academy of Sciences, and David Sainsbury, UK minister for scientific innovation. Both Lu and Chinese S&T Minister XU Guanhua were members of the forum's organizing committee. Previously, CAS Executive Vice President BAI Chunli attended 1st and 2nd annual meetings.

    Under the theme of "Science and Technology in Society: Lights and Shadows," the Forum addressed various issues concerning the ethics, education, security,  sustainable development of science and technology,  and their roles in a country's core strategy of development.

    Apart from the plenary meetings, Chen took part in the group sessions on Lights & Shadows Related to the Applications of Individual Genomic Information and on Enhancing Food Security by Science held on the afternoon of the Sept. 12 and on the morning of Sept 11, respectively.  He also made a speech entitled "Systems Biomedicine: Convergence of the West and East for a Better Life of All" at the group session on Enhancing food Security by Science held on the afternoon of Sept. 11.

    Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe attended the Forum's opening ceremony and delivered a welcome speech at the meeting. Also present were renowned scientists and political figures of the world today, including advisor to the US President John Marburger, president of the UK Royal Society Martin Rees.
